Why Recycled Pallets Are the Smart Choice

Every year, hundreds of millions of pallets circulate through American supply chains. A significant portion of those pallets are discarded after a single use, sent to landfills where they take up valuable space and waste the embodied energy used to produce them. At SD Re Pallet, we believe there is a better way.

Recycled pallets deliver the same structural performance as new pallets at a fraction of the cost. Our recycled wood pallets go through a rigorous inspection and repair process. We replace damaged deck boards, reinforce stringers, and re-nail every connection point so you receive a pallet that meets or exceeds industry load-bearing standards. The result is a product that performs identically to a new pallet, but costs 40 to 60 percent less.

Beyond cost savings, choosing recycled pallets makes measurable environmental impact. Each recycled pallet keeps roughly 40 pounds of wood out of the waste stream. When you multiply that across a typical order of 500 or 1,000 pallets, the diversion adds up quickly. Our customers collectively prevent thousands of tons of wood waste from reaching San Diego landfills every year.

Used vs. New Pallets: What You Need to Know

New Pallets

New pallets are manufactured from freshly milled lumber. They offer uniform appearance, consistent dimensions, and predictable strength. New pallets are the right choice when you need heat-treated (ISPM-15 compliant) pallets for international export, or when your customer or industry requires brand-new materials for hygiene or branding reasons.

We manufacture new pallets in standard GMA 48x40 dimensions as well as custom sizes. Our new pallets can be built from Southern Yellow Pine, Oak, or other hardwood and softwood species depending on your load requirements.

Recycled Pallets

Recycled pallets are previously used pallets that have been inspected, repaired, and reconditioned to meet strict quality standards. They are sorted into Grade A, B, and C categories based on their condition, and priced accordingly. Grade A recycled pallets are virtually indistinguishable from new pallets in terms of performance.

For domestic shipping, warehouse storage, and most supply chain applications, recycled pallets are the most cost-effective option. They deliver the same load capacity while keeping costs down and reducing your environmental footprint.

Product Comparison: All Pallet Types Side by Side

Choosing the right pallet starts with understanding the strengths and trade-offs of each type. This comparison covers cost, durability, load capacity, and best-fit applications to help you make the smartest purchasing decision.

Our Quality Guarantee

Every pallet that leaves our San Diego facility passes through a multi-point inspection process. We do not cut corners on quality because your products, your reputation, and your operations depend on the pallets performing exactly as expected.

Our quality guarantee covers structural integrity, dimensional accuracy, and grade consistency. If a pallet arrives at your facility and does not meet the grade you ordered, we replace it at no charge. If a pallet fails under rated loads within the first use cycle, we replace it and credit the delivery fee.

For recycled wood pallets, our inspection process includes checking every stringer for cracks, splits, and notch damage; verifying all deck boards are securely fastened with a minimum of two nails per connection; confirming dimensional accuracy within 1/4 inch of stated size; and sorting by grade with documented acceptance criteria. Learn more about our inspection and repair process.

Structural Inspection

Every stringer and deck board is visually inspected and stress-tested. Pallets with cracked stringers, loose boards, or protruding nails are repaired or rejected before grading.

Grade Accuracy

We maintain a grade accuracy rate above 98 percent. Spot audits are conducted on every outbound load to ensure grade consistency throughout the order.

No-Questions Replacement

If any pallet does not meet your expectations or the ordered grade specification, contact us within 48 hours and we will replace it on the next delivery run at no cost.

Lead Times and Inventory Availability

We maintain deep inventory on our highest-demand products so you can get pallets when you need them. Here are typical lead times from order confirmation to delivery within the San Diego metro area.

We currently maintain an average inventory of over 15,000 recycled wood pallets in the most common sizes (48x40, 42x42, 48x48). Inventory levels fluctuate seasonally, with tighter supply typical in Q4 due to holiday shipping demand. For guaranteed availability on large orders, we recommend placing orders 5 to 7 business days in advance or enrolling in a managed pallet program.

How to Choose the Right Pallet: A Decision Guide

Not sure which pallet type is best for your application? Walk through these five key questions to narrow your choice quickly.

1. What is your load weight?

For loads under 2,000 pounds, a standard recycled Grade B wood pallet handles the job at the lowest cost. Loads between 2,000 and 5,000 pounds benefit from Grade A hardwood or plastic pallets. Loads over 5,000 pounds typically require custom-engineered pallets with reinforced stringers or block construction.

2. Is this for domestic or international shipping?

Domestic shipping allows maximum flexibility. Recycled wood pallets are the most cost-effective choice for moves within the United States. International exports require ISPM-15 compliance, which means either heat-treated wood pallets with proper IPPC stamps, or plastic pallets that are exempt from phytosanitary regulations entirely.

3. Is hygiene a regulatory requirement?

Food processing, pharmaceutical manufacturing, and clean-room operations governed by FDA, USDA, or GMP standards should use plastic pallets. Their non-porous surfaces prevent bacterial growth and can be sanitized between uses. For food warehousing without direct product contact, Grade A wood pallets are acceptable in most regulatory frameworks.

4. One-way shipping or closed-loop system?

If your pallets leave your facility and do not come back (one-way shipping), recycled wood pallets deliver the lowest per-shipment cost. If your pallets circulate within a closed-loop system between your facilities or between you and known partners, plastic pallets offer a lower cost per trip over their 200+ trip lifespan, despite the higher upfront investment.

5. Do standard dimensions work, or do you need a custom size?

The standard GMA 48x40 pallet fits approximately 80 percent of domestic supply chain applications. If your product dimensions, racking configuration, or trailer layout requires a non-standard footprint, our custom pallet program can build any size from 24 inches to 120 inches or larger. Check our Pallet Size Guide to see if a standard size fits before investing in custom.
