When Plastic Pallets Are the Better Choice
Wood pallets dominate the pallet market by volume, but plastic pallets are the superior choice for specific applications where hygiene, durability, consistency, and export compliance matter more than upfront cost. If your operation involves food processing, pharmaceutical manufacturing, clean-room environments, or high-cycle closed-loop systems, plastic pallets deliver measurable advantages that offset their higher purchase price.
Unlike wood, plastic pallets do not absorb moisture, harbor bacteria, or splinter. They are immune to insect infestation, which means they are automatically compliant with ISPM-15 international shipping regulations without heat treatment. Plastic pallets also maintain perfectly consistent dimensions throughout their lifespan, which is critical for automated warehouse systems where even minor dimensional variation can cause conveyor jams and pick-and-place errors.

HDPE vs. Polypropylene Pallets
HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene)
HDPE is the most common plastic pallet material. It offers excellent impact resistance, chemical resistance, and temperature tolerance. HDPE pallets perform well in cold storage environments down to -40 degrees Fahrenheit, making them the standard choice for frozen food supply chains and cold-chain pharmaceutical logistics.
HDPE pallets are typically manufactured through injection molding, which produces pallets with precise, repeatable dimensions. They resist warping under load and maintain their shape through years of use. Most HDPE pallets are 100 percent recyclable at end of life.

PP (Polypropylene)
Polypropylene pallets are lighter than HDPE and offer higher heat resistance, tolerating temperatures up to 200 degrees Fahrenheit. This makes PP the preferred material for applications involving autoclaving, steam sterilization, or high-heat environments. PP is also more rigid than HDPE, which can be advantageous for racking applications.
The trade-off is reduced impact resistance at low temperatures. PP becomes brittle below 32 degrees Fahrenheit, so it is not recommended for freezer or cold-storage applications. PP pallets are typically less expensive than HDPE, making them an attractive choice for ambient-temperature operations.

Hygiene Advantages for Food and Pharma

Cleaning and Sanitization Procedures
Standard Wash
Suitable for general warehousing and non-food applications. Pressure wash at 1,200 to 1,500 PSI with ambient-temperature water. Allow pallets to air-dry for 2 to 4 hours before returning to service.

Sanitizing Wash
Required for food contact and pharmaceutical environments. Use a 200 ppm quaternary ammonium solution or 100 ppm sodium hypochlorite solution at 160F to 180F. Rinse with clean water and allow full drying.

Steam / Autoclave
