Reclaimed Pallet Wood for DIY and Commercial Use

Not every pallet that comes through our facility ends up back in the supply chain. Some pallets have reached the end of their structural life for shipping purposes, but their wood has only gotten better with age. The nail holes, weathering patterns, saw marks, and patina that make a pallet unsuitable for commerce make it perfect for creative and design applications.

At SD Re Pallet, we carefully disassemble retired pallets and sort the lumber by species, condition, and board dimensions. The result is reclaimed wood with authentic character that you cannot replicate with new lumber or artificial distressing. Every board tells a story through its grain, its marks, and its natural aging.

We sell reclaimed pallet wood to DIY enthusiasts, woodworkers, furniture makers, interior designers, restaurant and retail designers, and anyone looking for beautiful, sustainable, affordable wood with genuine character. Whether you need a dozen boards for a weekend project or a truckload for a commercial installation, we have the inventory and the expertise to help.

Furniture-Grade Reclaimed Wood

Our furniture-grade reclaimed wood is hand-selected from hardwood pallets, primarily Oak and Maple. These boards are thick, dense, and structurally sound, with surfaces that showcase the deep grain patterns and warm tones that only decades of natural aging can produce.

Furniture-grade boards are de-nailed, inspected for embedded metal, and sorted by thickness and width. We offer boards in raw condition for woodworkers who want full control over finishing, or planed and sanded for customers who want boards ready to cut and assemble.

Popular furniture projects with our reclaimed wood include dining tables, coffee tables, desks, benches, headboards, bookshelves, and bar tops. The combination of hardwood strength and aged character makes these boards a favorite of San Diego furniture makers and custom woodworkers.

Furniture-Grade Specs

  • Species: Predominantly Oak and Maple
  • Thickness: 3/4 inch to 1-1/2 inch
  • Width: 3-1/2 inch to 5-1/2 inch typical
  • Length: 36 to 48 inches typical
  • All nails and staples removed
  • Available raw or planed/sanded

Wall Paneling & Flooring

Reclaimed pallet wood accent walls have become one of the most popular interior design trends of the past decade, and for good reason. The mix of tones, textures, and grain patterns creates visual depth that painted drywall or manufactured paneling simply cannot match. Every installation is unique because every board is different.

We supply reclaimed wood specifically prepared for wall paneling applications. Boards are de-nailed, planed to a consistent thickness for flush mounting, and cut to specified lengths. We can provide boards in their natural aged color or lightly sanded to bring out the grain while preserving the weathered character.

For flooring applications, we offer thicker boards suitable for direct installation over subfloor. Reclaimed pallet wood flooring is particularly popular in restaurants, breweries, retail stores, and offices where the rustic aesthetic reinforces a brand identity built around authenticity and sustainability. San Diego's thriving craft brewery and restaurant scene has been a major driver of demand for our reclaimed wood paneling and flooring.

Planters, Shelving & Decor

Garden Planters

Pallet wood planters are a staple of the urban gardening movement. Build raised garden beds, vertical herb gardens, window boxes, and decorative planters from our reclaimed boards. The natural wood character blends beautifully with outdoor living spaces. We recommend sealing planters with food-safe wood sealant for edible gardens.

Floating Shelves

Reclaimed wood floating shelves add warmth and character to any room. Our thicker hardwood boards are ideal for shelving because they have the strength to support books, plants, and display items without sagging. Sand and seal for a smooth finish, or leave the surface raw for maximum rustic appeal.

Signs & Decor

Artists, sign makers, and craft businesses use our reclaimed wood as canvases and substrates for painted signs, laser-engraved artwork, menu boards, wedding signage, and seasonal decorations. The aged surface adds authenticity that enhances hand-lettering and rustic design.

The Beauty of Aged Wood Character

What makes reclaimed pallet wood special is the same thing that makes it imperfect. Every board carries the marks of its previous life: nail holes from assembly, surface abrasion from forklifts, weather staining from outdoor storage, and the subtle color shift that comes from years of natural oxidation.

These are not defects. They are character. They are the things that make a reclaimed wood coffee table more interesting than a factory-perfect one. They are the details that give an accent wall depth and texture. They are what makes a reclaimed wood sign feel authentic instead of manufactured.

Our reclaimed wood comes primarily from Southern Yellow Pine, Oak, Maple, and occasionally exotic tropical species that entered the pallet stream through international shipping. The variety of species means our inventory offers a natural mix of colors, from the warm honey tones of aged pine to the deep chocolate and gray hues of weathered oak.

We encourage customers to visit our San Diego facility to hand-select boards when character matching is important. For large orders, we can sort by color tone, species, or weathering level to ensure visual consistency across your project.

Sustainability Built Into Every Board

Choosing reclaimed wood is one of the most tangible sustainability choices you can make. Every board of reclaimed pallet wood you use is a board that did not require cutting down a new tree. No new logging, no new milling, no new transportation from a sawmill. The environmental cost of this wood has already been paid.

By purchasing reclaimed wood from SD Re Pallet, you are also keeping wood out of landfills. Wood in landfills decomposes anaerobically, producing methane, a greenhouse gas 25 times more potent than carbon dioxide. Our reclaimed wood program gives retired pallet lumber a second life and keeps it in productive use for years or decades longer. Learn more about our sustainability mission.

Wood Treatment and Preparation Process

Every board of reclaimed pallet wood goes through a careful preparation process before it reaches your hands. We take raw retired pallets and transform them into clean, safe, ready-to-use project wood in a multi-step process that preserves character while removing hazards.

First, pallets are disassembled by hand using pry bars and reciprocating saws to minimize board damage. Mechanical disassembly breaks boards, so we avoid it entirely for reclaimed wood stock. Each board is then run through a magnetic metal detector and inspected visually for embedded nails, staples, and screws. Any remaining fasteners are extracted individually.

Boards are sorted by species, thickness, width, and condition. Boards with excessive rot, insect damage, or chemical staining are rejected and diverted to our mulch and biomass recycling stream. Boards that pass inspection are stacked with spacers in our covered drying area for air circulation.

For customers requesting planed or sanded wood, we run boards through a thickness planer to remove 1/16 to 1/8 inch of surface material, revealing the clean grain beneath the weathered surface while maintaining the natural color variation and aged character. Sanded boards receive a 120-grit pass for a smooth, splinter-free surface that is ready for finishing.

Step 1: Hand Disassembly

Pallets are disassembled using hand tools to preserve full-length boards. Average recovery rate: 5 to 7 usable boards per pallet.

Step 2: De-Nailing and Metal Detection

All nails, staples, and hardware are extracted. Boards are scanned with handheld and pass-through metal detectors to ensure no embedded metal remains. Critical for customer safety and tool protection.

Step 3: Sorting and Grading

Boards are sorted by species (hardwood or softwood), dimensions, and condition. Furniture-grade boards are separated from paneling-grade and project-grade stock.

Step 4: Planing and Sanding (Optional)

Available for an additional $0.50 to $1.00 per board foot. Creates a smooth, consistent thickness while preserving aged color and grain. Recommended for furniture, shelving, and wall paneling.

Sourcing and Quality Standards

Not all pallet wood is suitable for reclaimed wood projects. We are selective about which pallets we disassemble for reclaimed wood stock, applying quality criteria that ensure every board you receive is safe, structurally sound, and aesthetically interesting.

We reject pallets that have been used to ship chemicals, pesticides, or toxic materials. We also reject pallets with any markings indicating methyl bromide fumigation (MB stamp). Only pallets with clean service histories or heat-treatment (HT) stamps enter our reclaimed wood stream.

Boards with active insect infestation, visible mold growth, or evidence of rot are rejected. Boards with surface mold staining that can be planed away are accepted for planed stock only. We also reject boards with excessive warp (more than 1/4 inch per foot of length), excessive twist, or splits longer than 3 inches.

Our Acceptance Criteria

  • No chemical contamination or toxic cargo history
  • No methyl bromide (MB) treatment stamps
  • No active insects or mold (surface stains OK if planable)
  • No rot or structural decay
  • Maximum warp: 1/4 inch per running foot
  • Maximum split length: 3 inches from end
  • 100% de-nailed and metal-detected
  • Minimum board thickness: 1/2 inch after planing

Finishing Recommendations

The finish you choose for your reclaimed wood project depends on the end use, the desired look, and the level of protection needed. Here are our recommendations based on common project types.

Interior Furniture

Apply 2 to 3 coats of polyurethane (water-based for clarity, oil-based for warmth) with light sanding between coats. Danish oil or tung oil are excellent natural alternatives that penetrate the grain and highlight character. Wax finishes provide a soft, matte look but require periodic reapplication.

Recommended: Arm-R-Seal by General Finishes or Watco Danish Oil

Wall Paneling

Interior wall paneling does not require a heavy-duty finish. A single coat of matte polyurethane or clear wax seals the surface, prevents dust absorption, and adds subtle sheen without making the wood look glossy. For an unfinished raw look, simply leave the wood natural.

Recommended: Minwax Polycrylic (matte) or Howard Citrus Shield Wax

Outdoor Projects

Outdoor projects require UV and moisture protection. Use an exterior-grade spar urethane or marine varnish for maximum durability. For a more natural appearance, exterior penetrating oil (such as Cabot Australian Timber Oil) protects without building a film. Reapply annually.

Recommended: Helmsman Spar Urethane or Thompson's WaterSeal

Staining

Reclaimed wood takes stain differently than new wood due to varied density, age, and previous exposure. Always test stain on a scrap piece first. Water-based stains penetrate more evenly on aged wood. Gel stains sit on top and provide more uniform color on mixed-species boards.

Recommended: General Finishes Gel Stain or Varathane Water-Based Stain

Food-Contact Surfaces

For cutting boards, bar tops, or kitchen counters, use food-safe mineral oil as a base coat followed by a food-safe wax blend (butcher block conditioner). Avoid polyurethane or varnish on direct food-contact surfaces. Reapply mineral oil monthly with regular use.

Recommended: Howard Butcher Block Conditioner or food-grade mineral oil

Commercial Installations

Restaurant and retail wall paneling should meet fire code requirements. Apply a fire-retardant clear coat (Class A or Class B rated) over the wood. Consult your local building code and fire marshal for specific requirements in commercial spaces. We can supply pre-treated boards upon request.

Recommended: Consult local fire code; fire-retardant top coat available
